State senators heard testimony Monday from consumer advocates and a representative of the toy manufacturers in the hopes of crafting legislation to address the problem of contaminated toys and other children's products.
Quick removal of contaminated items from the shelves, passing state legislation to make the sale of voluntarily recalled items illegal and more thorough and efficient methods of communicating product hazards to consumers were among the senators' top priorities. Sens. Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., Kemp Hannon and Carl Marcellino, called the hearing at Farmingdale State College and have been investigating the issue of contamination and hazards in toys and children's products with plans to create legislation addressing the issue next month.
The participants included representatives from the state Consumer Protection Board, Consumers Union, the Toy Industry Association and Clean NY.
