Sigma bins the bags in eco revolution

KITCHEN and bedroom manufacturer and retailer Sigma 3 has binned the use of plastic carrier bags.
The Llantrisant-based company, which says it has saved more than £10,000 through green policies, is now using reusable cotton carrier bags. The move is part of a wider environmental assessment by the interiors specialist, which has made huge steps towards lessening its carbon footprint over the past five years.
In 2002, all waste at Sigma 3 went directly into landfill, but the company now recycles over 90% despite continued growth and production rise of almost 100%.
Paula Morris, Sigma 3 marketing manager, said, “More than 17.5 billion plastic bags are given away by retailers in the UK every year, putting a huge unnecessary burden on landfill sites.
“At Sigma 3 we decided enough was enough and have acted ahead of the Welsh Assembly Government’s decision on the future of the plastic bag by introducing cotton bags across all our showrooms.
“We trialled the bags at the Ideal Home Show this year, and they were a huge hit with visitors to our stand. The best bit is that ours will be free, unlike the ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ versions that were fetching hundreds of pounds on eBay earlier this year.”
